PAN (Permanent Account Number) is India's 10-character tax ID issued by the Income Tax Department, in the pattern AAAAA9999A: five letters, four digits, one final letter. The structure is meaningful: the 4th character declares the holder type (P = individual, C = company, F = firm/LLP, H = HUF, T = trust, A = AOP, B = BOI, G = government, L = local authority, J = artificial juridical person), and for individuals the 5th character is the first letter of the surname. This tool validates the pattern and decodes the type locally.
Honest limitation: the Income Tax Department has never published a checksum algorithm for the final letter, so no offline tool can verify it mathematically — we validate structure and type consistency, and flag obviously malformed numbers. Existence, name match and Aadhaar-linking status can only be confirmed through the official e-filing portal's "Verify PAN" service. Last verified: July 2026.
FAQ
What does each part of a PAN mean?
Characters 1–3: alphabetic series. Character 4: holder type (P/C/F/H/T/A/B/G/L/J). Character 5: first letter of the surname (individuals) or entity name. Characters 6–9: sequential digits. Character 10: an alphabetic check character whose algorithm is not public.
Why can’t the last letter be verified offline?
Unlike GSTIN or CPF, the department has not published the check-character formula. Any site claiming full offline PAN verification is guessing — we tell you the truth: structure can be checked, the final letter cannot.
What is the connection between PAN and GSTIN?
A GSTIN embeds the holder’s full PAN in characters 3–12. If you have a GSTIN, our GSTIN validator extracts and cross-checks the PAN pattern automatically.
How do I officially verify a PAN?
Use "Verify Your PAN" on the Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in) — it confirms existence and the name on record. This tool is the instant local pre-check for typos before you get there.
